ps: the transition was kinda radical but I already am getting used to.

Congratulations on doing what a lot of people around here talk about but never actually do. I hope it works out great for you, and I am glad to see you will still be on the forums.

when someone goes off grid i am always curious about their internet connection method.

i would like to be off grid but giving up internet would be tough

ps: ranch has several wifi connections... so I am still connected to the web. they are completely self-sufficient for the rest (water, food and heat/cooling system)... and they even have a swimming pool!

too tired, going to bed now. :4_8_4v:

Hope it all works out for you. I've been off grid for 25 years now.....we get by just fine, in fact we've flourished. You get out what you put in, I think it's right up your alley.

All the best

Yay, yay! Yurt living. Keep us posted on how awesomely awesome it is.

I came to the realization the other day, that you shouldn't have to retire from something you dislike doing. You should just live the life you want to live.

Good luck, sounds like you're on the right path.

I would love to see some pictures of the terrain out there, as well as some pictures of the Yurt.

I have looked at the Yurts before - how sturdy are they? Can you give some more opinions and thoughts on them, like for instance would you actually buy one after staying in one?

Congrats - and looking forward to following this thread!

Yes stay away!

That stuff is evil and it seems if you even get within a few
feet of it, it will get on you.

Nothing like a couple of hundred spines (long ones)
buried in your flesh.(feels like it any way)

And good luck and may you enjoy the life experience you have at hand!

Re: I am off the grid!!

Congrats for reaching your dream. I'm still in transition. We moved from Colorado to Wisconsin in May. I own 5.25 acres, and we just moved a garage onto the property that I'm going to convert to a 528 sq ft off-grid house for my family. It has been a challenging transition, but I just keep my eyes on the rewards you are enjoying.

Congrats! Have you considered keeping a detailed journal? Might be excellent book fodder!!!

Thanks for keeping us in the loop too.

Re: I am off the grid!!

Congratulations. Once you're settled in, please let me know how spacious a 16-foot yurt feels to you. Did the ranch provide the foundation for your yurt, or did you have one built? Are you going to use an insulating liner? Are you putting in a wood burning stove?

What are community rules on collecting firewood? If you had to do it again and time was not a factor, would you save more money to buy a larger yurt? Are you sleeping in a bed, a cot, or a sleeping bag? How do kitchen facilities work in a yurt, or does the ranch use a centralized mess hall?

Sorry to ask so many questions, you don't need to answer them - can you tell I'm excited for you?

Congratulations again!
